The Landscape Artist Speaks
Recently a student wrote asking a question about the difference in watercolor paper.
“I bought Aqyarelle Arches Watercolor Block, 100% Cotton Cold Press, 300lbs, 9X12 from Cheap Joe’s. Is there any difference between painting on cold press and hot press paper”?
My answer is, cold press watercolor paper has a rough texture and the hot press watercolor paper has a smooth finish. Consider the subject of your painting before deciding which texture paper to paint on.
Two examples for choosing which paper to select. If planning to paint a landscape then choose cold press paper. If your selection is a still life, then choose h0t press paper.
Some other considerations:
To me, the textures on each side of cold press are different. It is acceptable to use either side.
Also, be aware of the embossing in two corners of watercolor paper. Usually I select the side that makes the embossing readable. It is acceptable to use the embossing right side up or upside down.
The block is also an excellent choice. It doesn’t have to be stretched, even if it’s not 300lb.
