Musings

The beginning watercolor workshop at the Blackshear Place Library on May 2, 2009 was great!

There were 8 students ranging from a 10 year old to older.  We painted “Ronnie’s Retreat”.  After we practiced in the morning we painted the actual picture after lunch.

Just want to mention that the Northeast Georgia Arts Tour is coming up in June, will let you know more about this great weekend as I receive more information.

Also, the Lake Rabun Art Show sponsored by the North Georgia Arts Guild will be held in July, more on this later.

This is a great time to get out and visit galleries and other places where artists are demonstrating their art.

Buying Paintings

With art festivals in full swing during the spring, summer and fall seasons, it’s a good time to discuss how to buy an original painting.

If you go to the Mountain Flower Art Festival or the Atlanta Arts Festival, or any other festival there will be many different styles of paintings to choose from

Do you know the style of painting that speaks to you?  It may be a romantic style or abstract.  The colors may be muted and soft or a bright composition, with the artist using many colors to create the design.

How is your home or office decorated?  Will you need to use heavy, ornate frames or a more informal wood frame?  Oil paintings lend themselves very nicely to either the ornate or wood frame.  For a watercolor painting, choose a light, narrow frame.  It can be ornate but narrow.  Personally, I like a metal frame with watercolor.  There are many beautiful colors that coordinate with the painting.

Oil paintings may be painted on canvas, linen or boards prepared especially for oil paintings.

Watercolor paintings may be on hot press paper or cold press paper.  The paper weight is important also.  It can range from 90 lbs to 300lb or more.  A popular weight is 140 lb.

A question to ask the artist is how environmentally friendly are the materials used in the painting.

You may fall in love with a painting that is not oils or watercolor.  If it’s a pastel, it needs to be framed in a special way.
