Using a medium for watercolor and oil paintings gives the artist a distinct advantage.

Mediums used with oils are as follows:

Liquin – an alkyd medium – speeds drying time, allows painting glazes in a short period of time.

Linseed oil – a derivative of flax seed. Speeds drying time, has a strong odor and is not edible.

Others – poppy seed oil, walnut and safflower oil.  These vary in drying time with less yellowing.

Mediums used in Water Color are as follows:

Blending – keeps the paint open longer – more workable

Granulating – adds texture

Oxgall Liquid – increases paint flow and can be used for washes

Gum Arabic – increases transparency and gloss

Two of the mediums – Liquin and Gum Arabic give the painting greater brilliance of color.
