The variety of our paintings is dependent on many factors.

These are some areas of variety could be described as variety of shape, variety of tone values, variety in edge shapes, variety in texture and a variety in graduation.

Each of these elements has a rhythmic quality of its own and it’s a long list.

The shape of variety is one of the most common things found in nature.

To give our paintings life and interest, try to draw a row of trees. All about the same height and the same distance apart, from your imagine.

Do you see how hard it is to get nature into them?

No matter how imaginative you may be, or how far you are able to go with design, there comes a time when it will be imperative that you study from nature.

To see how I use nature to inspire my paintings. Opt in to receive the Valle of Yellow Creek Art Studio E-Zine and receive a short report “Choosing To Be An Artist – For A Lifetime as a free gift to you from me. You will enjoy and learn more important art information in the E-Zine and Report. The E-Zine is published on the 1st and 3rd Saturday.

Making art and a garden go hand in hand.

The first things that comes to mind are composition and color.

A composition needs a focal point, something that is smashing and eye catching. It could be a trellis with a humming bird vine trained over it. In front of the trellis, place a plant such as an Elephant Ear, add Astilbe and Lambs Ear to give movement, as well as adding contrast with dark green, soft pink and gray color.

Place your easel in the shade, begin to sketch and or paint. Your focal point is already set up!

Please join me in this peaceful place, and enjoy nature. Spring is a beautiful time to be outside. Have you noticed all the different greens and reds?

Returning home from a visit of several days at our home in Lob Lolly Cove, we find lots of good soaking rain and snow. It’s good to be home.

Wildlife in the cove were very active, spring fever, I think. Anyway, as usual the Crows were always in convention, with the Pileated Woodpecker coming in at a close second. The Great Blue Heron, visited, dunked for his breakfast, in the shallow end of the pond and went on his way. The Fox Squirrel made his breakfast from tiny, wild cherry leaves at the pond’s edge.

All this is inspiring, gives my mind a rest, and brings me home with new zeal to paint what I know and love. This painting below is inspired by the scene from the kitchen window at the cove.

I invite you to sign up for the Valle of Yellow Creek Art Studio E-Zine in the sign up box above. It is filled with helpful artist tips, no matter which medium you use, Musings and Special Events. Published on the first and third Saturday of each month.

Keep on keeping on with paint brush in hand!
