Now and then I like to depart from the normal flow of my blog to speak of other subjects that are dear to me. This post is one of those times.
A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” Maya Angelou
To keep on singing is a hard, hard thing to do at this time of year, especially after the passing of a Mother, Daughter, Sister, Wife, Step Daughter or friend. The songs are a reminder of our loved one and all she enjoyed in her life. In my case, she really enjoyed music and couldn’t wait to play Christmas songs by country music artist, Dwight Yoakam. Especially his “Santa Claus in Back in Town” presentation. At Christmas she answered the phone with a bright and happy “Ho, Ho Baby” no matter what the reality of her life was that day.
We sing because we have a song to honor her life. Here are 3 suggestions to help you sing.
Sing along as you play the songs you both loved, tho these songs sometime bring sadness, it brings her near, and for a little while you can remember her singing or playing guitar or other musical instruments.
It’s impossible to sing and cry at the same time. I learned that this year as I decorated for the holidays. Somehow singing lifts our spirits and fills our souls. The old songs such as “Silent Night” brings peace and I am glad for the Savior that makes this song possible.
Pick an activity that all the family loved, such as gathering round the piano and singing hymns. Christmas carols fill our homes with cheer, and we are thankful, so thankful for other family members. Hanging our poster of “12 Days of Christmas” is a joyous time still. We gather round as a family and sing the words from the poster.
No, we still do not have an answer, but like the bird that sings because it has a song, we sing because we have a song of her and how much she meant to us.
In loving memory of my daughter, who passed from this life at age 50, due to metastatic breast cancer.
Would you like to write to me about the experience of losing your loved one to breast cancer and the ways you sing of her? I would love to hear your story.
