Even if you use a paper plate, the paint should be organized in a certain way.
When selecting a palette these are some of the things to look for.
For oils I use a Masterson palette. It’s easier for me to start out mixing color on a neutral color. Using parchment paper gives a medium tone to mix against. Place the parchment paper on the bottom of the palette, then a piece of glass cut to fit into the palette. When I seal the palette the paint will last several days.
For watercolor I use a travel palette with 32 wells on one side and the lid is used as a mixing space.
In the beginning, use a very limited palette. Yellow, Red and Blue with Black and White.
Lay these colors as you choose, but the warm colors should be together and the cool colors together.
White should be placed in a spot by it’s self to make it easier to pick up and mix with other colors.
Place black in a separate spot also. I use the lower left area of the palette for neutral colors
