The Landscape Artist Speaks
Do you see shapes in nature, the photos that you use or when you’re looking to see how someone else painted a picture?
I want to share with you information regarding leaf shape.
This information is taken from “Watercolor Basics – Painting Flowers” author, Sharon Hinckley.
“Our basic leaf shapes are: linear, round, oval, triangular and squiggly.
Linear – agapanthus, gladiolus and daffodil.
Round – water lilies, geraniums and nasturtiums.
Oval – hydrangeas, orange trees and roses.
Triangular – ivy, hibiscus and ferns.
Squiggly – daisy, cosmos and poppies”.
I found this material while looking through my sources for information about poppy leaves. My student, Lois, is painting a large and colorful watercolor poppy painting and we wanted to check the basic leaf shapes.
This information can also be used when you are buying a painting. Notice how the leaf shapes compliment flower shapes.
Notice if the leaf shapes are painted in a definable shape or are they simply implied. The color may be painted in detail or sketched in very loosely with the paint bursh. Either way just be sure the style continues through out the painting.
