The Landscape Artist Speaks
Do you have a hard time selecting just the right frame for your original paintings? Do you know that oils, watercolors or pastels requires a different type frame? Do you know why?
The number one problem is selecting the right style framing for your painting. There are several things to consider here. They are as follows:
Rabbet
Ready-Made
Custom-Made
Metal or Wood
Ornate or Simple
Color
In this post I’ll explain the rabbet. It’s very simply the groove on back of the frame where the picture fits.
These are some things to look:
1) How deep is the rabbet? Does your painting that is on strectcher bars fit nicely into the rabbet?
2) Watercolor and pastels are flat, not on stretcher bars, so they don’t need as much space. The space does have to be deep enough to accomodate the glass, the painting and the backing.
3) Finally, what if you have fallen in love with a frame that the rabbet is not deep enough to allow your oil or acrylic painting to fit nicely? Usually your framer can make suggestions or you need to select another frame.
