To find a center of interest Bill Palluth lists and demonstrates 16 basic compositional forms in the “Walter Foster Composition Made Easy” Book.
They are as follows:
Steelyard
“L”
Grouped Mass
Three Spot
Silhouette
Tunnel
Pattern
Golden Mean
S Curve
Circular
U
Diagonal Line
Triangle
Cross
Radiating Line
Balance Scale
The one most familiar to me and many other artists is the Golden Mean. Draw a diagonal line across your canvas corner to corner then draw a line at a right angle to the diagonal. Where the lines cross is the place for your center of interest.
This compositional form allows the artist to divide the canvas into four ideal areas to place the center of interest.
